This is the Eve of the second decade of my life.
I want to make a list of things I’ve learned over these past ten years, but so much has happened that the thought is a little daunting.  Rather than being overwhelmed, I decided to narrow it down to the twenty most important life lessons: It’s okay to open up to people.  There’s no point in building walls around yourself and shutting out everyone else. Music is akin to oxygen: ...

Welcome to the Last Day of the year
Reading through my old journal made me realize something - not very many huge events happened this year, but many little things did; things that aren’t worth mentioning.  They’re significant to me, but not the sort of details one records individually.  Here are a few highlights, though: January 2009:  I heard for the first time, a song that has become so important to me that it is...

My friend wrote me this wonderful poem:
You are a friend from long ago Who happens to see my dreams A person who can understand When things are not how they seem That makes you really special A person so near and dear Whom I can share everything And whose kindness I revere I wish I could tell you how much You have always meant to me But that would take the centuries That I’d rather spend with thee I love you very much because Your...

I enjoy reading children's books.
I like looking at them from the perspective of a child as well as my perspective as an adult.  It especially helps when I read books that my seven-year-old cousin reads (i.e. The Lightning Thief or the Harry Potter series). Since most of my discussion of the Harry Potter books has been with other adults or teenagers, it’s fascinating to hear his views on them.  He’s currently reading...

One of My Favorite Things About Writing
I can plan out every detail in every chapter of my story, but I can still find the plan unreliable.  What I can rely on are my characters - I can rely on them to walk outside the line I’ve drawn for them.  I can rely on them develop minds of their own and make decisions that I would never have expected.  Writing is exciting because it’s so unpredictable.  Often I’m amazed at how...

Gelato Classico; Palo Alto, CA →
If you’re in the Stanford U area, you must try this out.  So creamy and delicious.  They have a good amount of flavors to choose from, but not so many that you’ll be stuck for hours.  Plus, it’s at the beginning of University Avenue, so it’s simple to grab some and then take a nice leisurely walk down the avenue. 435 Emerson Street, Palo Alto, CA

Taking two American Cultures classes has really...
I’m stunned by how a human being can treat another human being just because he/she is different.  I’m amazed at the lengths people can go to rationalize not treating a human being as a human being.  You could say that I’m disillusioned.  I’m disillusioned and disheartened by the reality of America, this country I’ve always been so proud to live in. It’s...

It's incredible how simply a stranger can change...
A glance, a smile.  He might not even know that he has brightened your otherwise dreary day. On the flip side, you never know whose day you might brighten with a glance or a smile. Don’t take it for granted.
